Pain Control in Labour
Each woman copes with pain in her own way. If you are able to view the experience of childbirth as a personal challenge, natural childbirth will give you a feeling of empowerment rather than helplessness. Childbirth classes can teach you breathing and relaxation techniques. Massaging your abdomen lightly during contraction also helps, and massage by a companion may work wonders.
There are various medications that provide relief from pain. Narcotic medications such as pethidine, morphine or tramadol, which are given as an injection reduce pain. Some women may feel woozy or forgetful. If these medications are given too close to delivery, they may cause drowsiness in the baby. Inhaled medications may allow a woman to relax and go away a little mentally. It's best to discuss these pain relief options with your obstetrician well before you go into labour. But every woman experiences the pain of labour differently, so it's not until you are actually in labour that you will know for sure what you need.
