10 Things To See With Your Kids Before They Turn 14
Children grow up so fast and before you know it, they will want to hang out with their friends instead of you. So why not create some special memories while they are still excited to go on adventures with you. Remember to bring your camera and capture these fun family moments.
1. See The World Through Their Eyes
Children see the world from a different perspective, so why not give them your old camera or buy an inexpensive one and let them take photos of what they see. You may be surprised to find out what is important to them, what they focus on and how they relate to the world.
2. See a Movie at An Outdoor Cinema
Add a new dimension to seeing a movie and book tickets at an outdoor cinema. There are several available in Sydney during summer including Starlight Cinema, St George OpenAir Cinema, Ben & Jerry’s Openair Cinemas. Tickets are only a few dollars more expensive than regular movies, but the experience is definitely worth it. Bring a picnic or buy refreshments on site and don’t forget your beach chair for comfortable viewing.
3. Visit a Farm
We all take for granted that food is easy to get – stroll down the supermarket aisle and you can buy whatever you need. Show your kids where much of their food comes from by visiting a farm. They will learn how corn is harvested, how cows are milked and how eggs are collected. And if you feel inspired and have the space in your backyard why not grow some fresh herbs or vegetables.
4. Watch the Sunrise or the Sunset
Early mornings and evenings are special times of the day. Everything seems so peaceful and serene. Why not pack a picnic and head to a spot, where you can share these special moments with your children.
5. Visit an Old Car Museum
Exploring the history of cars is fascinating for children and adults. You can either visit a museum dedicated to cars or an exhibit within a museum. Most museums are interactive and some may even allow you to sit behind the wheel of historic vehicles.
6. Watch the Clouds
Life is so busy with school, work, sporting activities, etc, so it is important to take time out and do nothing. Grab a blanket and head outside. Get everyone to lie down and watch the clouds go by. If you see pictures form, share them with your kids. You will be amazed by their imagination.
7. Watch Taping of a TV Show or Program
Experience what goes on behind the scenes of a TV Show and take your kids to see the taping of a TV program. There are many to choose from – cooking shows, talent shows, comedy, chat, sitcom or reality. Visit
Applause Store website for more information. Tickets are generally free, but check for minimum age before you book.
8. Play Tourist in Your Own City
Have you explored all the tourist attractions your city has to offer? If not, then why not grab a tourist brochure in a local hotel and see what experiences, tours and fun things there are to do in your city. And just like real tourists, make sure you take plenty of photos.
9. Go To the Theatre
Most children are used to seeing movies at the cinema, but have never experienced a live show. Check out your local theatre for child friendly performances and shows.
10. Tour a Ship
Why not take your family on a tour of a battle ship or a tall ship. If your kids are interested in history or the NAVY they will love this adventure. Instead of reading about what life was like on the sea, they will be able to experience it for themselves. In Sydney, Maritime Museum is a great place to explore and learn about life on the ocean.
