10 Cheap School Holiday Activities

School holidays can be a great time to interact and enjoy your children being at home. But it can be hard when the kids get bored. Not to mention stressful when outings can cost a fortune, especially if you have a large family. So here are some cheap or free activities to do with your kids over the holidays.

Get the kids outdoors and go for a bush walk

1. Go for a nature walk.

Sometimes just being out in the fresh air does wonders for kids with boundless energy and mums with frazzled nerves. You could even build a bush cubby, or bring notebooks and pencils for some nature sketches.

2. Watch a movie.

Go through your DVD collection and watch a family friendly movie. Or you could hire one from your local video store. Most of them have specials like a dollar day where you can hire a new release movie for $1. You could even make some popcorn or snacks.

3. Play a board game.

The favorites in our house are Labyrinth, Scrabble, Talisman, Cluedo and Monopoly. Younger kids might like Hungry Hippos, Operation or UNO.

4. Visit the library.

My kids love the library and we go there regularly to borrow books and DVDs. Some libraries even hold school holiday activities. Check with your local library.

5. Do some baking.

Get the kids to bake a cake, biscuits, scones or a slice for morning or afternoon tea. Why not invite grandparents or some friends around and enjoy it together.

6. Park or playground day.

Parks and playgrounds are a great free resource. Pack the bikes, scooters, kite, frisbee or ball. Along with snacks or lunch for a fun day out.

7. Get crafty.

With the internet at your fingertips it is now easier than ever to find craft ideas that your kids will love. Whether it be dragon, aliens, mermaids, or princesses chances are there is a craft idea that will suit them to a tee.

8. Have a Wii or Xbox tournament.

This is a holiday favourite in our house. Why not try playing Bowling, Tennis, Carnival Games, Just Dance or any other multi player games. You could make up a prize for the winner. Like getting to pick their favourite meal.

9. Make a story or comic book.

Kids have wonderful imaginations and a great way to channel that is to get them to make their own story book or comic. If they are too young to write the words themselves you could scribe for them and get them to draw the pictures.

10. Visit the city.

Catch a train into the city and visit the Art Gallery or Museum for a low cost day out. Sometimes they even hold free activities. Check your city website for more details.
