Coughs and colds are very common amongst children. Giving them general over the counter medicines regularly, is not a good practice and is certainly not advisable. Instead, it can be a good idea to try some general home remedies, especially on kids below 5 years, to also help to develop their immunity. My child was prone to coughs and colds and I have tried these home remedies which really helped.
Add 1 tsp of turmeric powder to a glass of milk and add a pinch of pepper powder to it and give it to your child at bedtime. This will help to soothe the throat and help dissolve the cough. For helping the kids to like the taste, you could add half a spoon of their favorite milk powder like bournvita or drinking chocolate to it.

1 spoonful of honey with ½ spoon ginger gives a great relief and protection to the throat against dry cough.
Carrom seeds (Ajwain) helps to keep the body temperature in sync during change of weather.
To try this, add carrom seeds and basil leaves (tulasi) to water and boil and filter it. You can feed your kid the filtered water, at every 1-2 hours intervals. Here again, if your kid does not like the taste, you may consider adding some honey to it. This will also help to provide some relief for the throat too.
