Protecting our Children's Innocence

by Colleen P Moyne (Colmo) (follow)
I'm a freelance writer living in the beautiful river town of Mannum in SA, dreaming of the day I can retire from the 9-5 to write full time.

The following views concern a rather serious and controversial subject but one we all need to consider. With all the attention that has been raised by recent stories of paedophilia, we are more alert than ever to the safety of our children.

This subject was brought to my attention recently by the following incident:

I was in a local eatery and noticed a father and daughter sitting nearby. By my estimation the girl was aged somewhere between eight and ten years old. She was a typical kid, enjoying an outing with her dad and they seemed to be having a good time.
When the young girl got up out of her seat to fetch a straw for her drink, I saw an older man watching her. His eyes followed her all the way to the counter and stayed on her for an uncomfortably long time.

It was only then I noticed what the girl was wearing - a short t-shirt and tight-fitting leggings. There was nothing particularly adult about her dress, but it did accentuate her young body and I believe this was why the older man was watching her. The father continued to eat his lunch, unaware that his daughter was being watched so intently.

The older man may have meant no harm, but there was something disquieting in the way his eyes roved over the girl. I agonised over whether to draw the father's attention to what I saw.

It made me realise how important it is to be aware of how others see our kids.

We may see them as our babies and to us the girl's outfit was quite innocent, but it's a sad statement about the world we live in that we need to concern ourselves with how a predator might view them. We need to do everything we can to protect their innocence and to protect the image they may unwittingly portray.

In this case the parent had done nothing wrong and after a few moments the older man seemed to lose interest and go on his way, but in another scenario things may have been very different.

I guess the point I'm trying to make here is that we need to be vigilant with our children and do all we can to protect them from those who look past their youth and innocence and see something more.
