Childhood is a time of growth, imagination, play and wonder. Toys are an important vehicle for children to discover how to express themselves and explore their inner worlds as they learn about the world around them. To put it simply, toys are the tools children use to learn with. While there are many good toys for children made domestically, some of the best toys for nurturing a childís growing mind come from companies based outside of the United States. Below is a list of the top 5 international toys that engage a childís mind and let them explore and develop their natural creativity.

Brio:

Brio toys are a staple of any young childís toy box. Brio is known for their high quality, long enduring toys that are up to the challenge of high use by little hands. The classic Brio wooden trains and connectable wooden tracks are simple, sturdy, toddler proof toys that are good for years of play. Their wooden animals and simple musical instruments are also similarly enduring and endearing. Classic, old fashioned Brio toys stand up to the test of time.

Schleich:

Schleich figures are realistically detailed animal figurines, the perfect toy for children who loves animals. Even when they are fantasy figures, the attention to detail makes children feel like they are holding a real, tiny dragon in the palm of their hand. From farm animals, to knights and dragons and all the horses a child could ever want, Schleich figurines are beautiful miniatures that make day dreams come to life.

Playmobil :

Made in Germany, these childhood favorites have grown past their original line of Playmobil people, houses and cars. Theyíve expanded into an imagination fill world populated by Vikings, knights, pirates, spacemen and even fairies. Playmobil lets children play out their imaginary adventures with all the figures and creatures they desire.

Sylvanian families:

Sylvanian families are darling woodland animals and their neighbors who live in charming country homes. Sylvanian families toy lines are populated with the sweetest animals youíll ever see. There are bunnies, hedge hogs, bears, foxes, kitties, mice and foxes, all designed to make you die of cute. A fun toy set that any child would adore, Sylvanian families toys are very collectible. They include doll houses, furniture, accessories, cars, boats, shops, camping tents, a treehouse, a hotel, and even a dentistís office. Itís a fully actualized play world for the little characters to live in. Sylvanian families is a wholesome toy land that children love for itís cute animal characters and itís imaginative play settings.

Lego:

Of all the toys, none other is as versatile as the little toy bricks from Denmark. Lego offer limitless play possibilities in the hands of an imaginative child. With its popular licensed titles, such as Star Wars, or Lord of the Rings, as well as Legoís own titles, such as Ninjago and Bionicle the bounds of play are endless. Lego is the king of modular toys. Children learn about the basics of engineering from following Lego instructions and the ability to create from oneís own mind by not following instructions. Best of all Lego grows up with the child. Rather than outgrowing them, the older the child gets, the more complex their Lego creations become.
