The city of Cairns in Queensland is a popular destination with a variety of natural and cultural attractions. Itís a great place to take the whole family, with its beaches, water sports, and fascinating Aboriginal history. Itís also a popular stop on the way to the Great Barrier Reef. Letís look at some of the best attractions in Cairns for families with kids.

1. Cairns Botanical Gardens

This is a place where you can appreciate the diverse tropical plants found in Cairns. There are also flora from around the world. Itís both fun and educational for people of all ages. Youíre likely to encounter plants and flowers youíve never seen before. There are several distinct areas, each showcasing a different type of plant life. Admission to the botanical gardens is free.

2. Muddyís Playground

This splash playground gives kids a fun and safe environment where they can slide, walk on rope bridges, explore play houses and enjoy see-saws and a variety of games. Play areas are fenced so that younger kids canít wander off. Thereís a cafe where you can buy food and snacks as well as picnic tables and barbecues where you can prepare your own food.

3. Kuranda Scenic Railway

One of the best ways to take in the beauty of Cairns is by rail. This short but spectacular trip takes you from Cairns to Kuranda, passing through the Barron Gorge National Park. The train goes through tunnels and over bridges as you observe waterfalls, rainforests and all kinds of dramatic scenery. You can then explore Kuranda, which has many shops and restaurants. If you want to spend a little more time in Kuranda, you might want to check out Kuranda Koala Gardens, a unique wildlife park where you can see koalas up close.

If you want to bring the kids to the beach, Trinity Beach is one of your best choices in Cairns. Itís a relaxing beach lined with palm trees, with free parking and plenty of room to enjoy sunbathing, swimming and water sports. Thereís a playground for kids. There are barbecues and picnic areas if you want to cook your own burgers or steaks. There are also several good restaurants and cafes nearby. There are hotels close to Trinity Beach if you want to stay near the ocean.

5. Esplanade Boardwalk

One of the nicest things about Cairns is that there are many places where you can go on scenic walks with your family. Esplanade Boardwalk is among the best spots for this. As itís centrally located, many people choose to stay in a hotel near the boardwalk. There are many free activities, including playgrounds and recreational facilities. The best part is simply walking the boardwalk and taking in the views, people and vendors. Itís a good place to buy items made by local artists. There are paths for biking and skating as well.
